TIFF 2023: ALICE & JACK (Juho Kuosmanen, Victor Levin, 2023)

ALICE & JACK is an upcoming romantic-drama TV series created and written by prolific TV writer/producer Victor Levin (Mad About You, Mad Men), directed by Juho Kuosmanen (Cannes 2021 Grand Prix Winner Compartment No. 6), and starring generational talents Andrea Riseborough and Domhnall Gleeson. 

Alice (Riseborough) is a high-powered executive living alone in London. She’s smart but tough – on herself and others. Jack (Gleeson) is a shy but optimistic medical researcher. The two meet one night as a result of a dating app connection. From the moment they lay eyes on each other, the repartee begins immediately. 

This is not, however, a typical happy-ever-after love story.

Alice and Jack are magnetically drawn to each other, yet their differences result in friction. Over the course of several years, the two are pushed and pulled to and from each other, and, despite their best intentions, there are unexpected consequences.

Throughout his career, Golden Globe-nominated actor Domhnall Gleeson has portrayed romantic leads that are wonderfully human, nuanced, and complex. From the stoic Jim Farrell in BROOKLYN, to mischievous Billy Johnson in RUN, and of course Tim in the soul-stirring film, ABOUT TIME, Gleeson completely transforms into each role. He brings romantic lead roles wholly to life as multi-dimensional characters that are always alluring.

Oscar-nominee Riseborough is a chameleonic actor who brings an understated prowess to each of her roles, whether Hollywood blockbusters or cerebral indies. Watching the two together in ALICE & JACK is captivating. You don’t want to take your eyes off them. You feel the tension, the attraction, the longing in every scene. It’s a treat to watch two exquisite talents bring this relationship to life.
